Tell us a bit about yourself.
Hello, my name is Rosdi and I’m a Chartered Accountant based and working remotely for a multinational IT company in Selangor, Malaysia. I’m also a husband and father to two beautiful daughters.
During my free time, I’m also a hobbyist content creator where I make content sharing about my desk setup journey and product review ranging from tech to lifestyle products mainly on Instagram.
What’s your favorite item on your desk?
It’s really difficult to choose which one of the items are my favorite as I mentioned before that I’m particular with what I put on my desk. If I have to choose the one that is really important for my workflow, it would be the MX Master 3 simply because I’m dealing with large spreadsheets so the thumb wheel really helps with increasing productivity. Another item would be the newly added Jsaux Portable Monitor simply because the screen can be used either horizontally or vertically, with one or two screens and can easily be brought whenever I work remotely.
What books, blogs, or podcasts recently caught your attention?
Lately I’m really into architecture and interior design thus I’ve been collecting ‘Design Anthology’ magazines. I really like their styles where they showcase some places with cool architecture and designs. The photos they took are just so good it even inspires me to try to mimic their photography style. And when the magazines are not in use, it does act as excellent props or coffee table books. As for podcasts, it can vary from content creation, business and religion. I don’t have a specific channel as I tend to listen to the topics discussed.
What's your desk setup aesthetics?
Modern and minimalism while maintaining the simplicity and functionality aspect of it. I tend to lean towards basic and neutral colors mainly black, wood, white/gray. I’m also selective of what items that I want to have on my desk so all of it serves a purpose and is within reach.
When did you start to work on your desk setup?
My desk setup journey started in November 2019 but not until December 2020 where I started to share my setup after moving in my current house. Since then, content creation has been rewarding where I’m able to move my setup to a spare room and transform it to my office/studio plus upgrading my setup to what it is today. It also introduced me to a lot of other creators with the same interest, sharing and gaining knowledge with them and working with some of my favorite brands.
What does your typical day look like?
a. To recap, I’m a full-time Chartered Accountant, husband, and father with two kids. I start my day with waking up around 6am getting ready to send my kids to religious school then have breakfast with my wife. I started working at 9am and stopped at 10.30am to pick up my kids from school. Then at lunchtime I send them to primary school and have my lunch. Then work until 5pm before going out to pick my kids from school.
b. From there, quite a portion of my contractual hours are taken up by father duties. So as a responsible adult, I cover those hours after the kids are asleep. During this time or whenever I have free time, I focus on content creation. I try not to focus too much on it as I still treat it as a hobby, not a job. I prefer to spend my free time with my family. Hence I prefer not to work or make content even on the weekends.
What niche interest are you up to recently?
Apart from desk setup and home office, I’m really into architecture and interior design these days. Other than that, maybe improving and focusing more into mobile videography as lately I’ve video clips and even movies shot using iPhone.
Your advice for beginners getting into Desk Setup.
Firstly, there’s the obvious ones like planning your workspace, getting inspiration from the likes of Instagram or Pinterest, etc. My advice is don’t get caught up in trends or flashy products as they can be expensive and impractical for your type of work. Buy only the things that you need, not want. If it is expensive, look for alternatives, and if there are none, you won’t regret saving up for it. Planning and measuring are key to getting it right, and don’t rush the process.
Any tips for other makers who want to improve their workspaces?
There’re a lot of ways to improve our setups but the best and safest way to really improve one's setup, in my humble opinion, is always to invest in good quality products, especially the staple ones like desk, chair and monitors as those tend to take up the biggest chunk of our setup cost. Although it might be expensive, a good quality product can last you a long time and you’ll get the return from your investment for sure. But of course you don’t need to get them immediately and it’s always a good practice to save up and wait for sales. Another alternative is to surround yourselves with items that make you happy, which can be either affordable or expensive. It can be like plants, arts or figurines. The point is to make the space yours and a place that relaxes and/or be productive.
